Where your metal sits

Noble works with International Depository Services of Texas. An IRA's metal must be held at an IRS-approved depository, and a Texas facility places it in a different state from Delaware Depository, which Augusta and Birch Gold Group name. That is a matter of preference, not a legal advantage.

Ask whether the metal is segregated, meaning your exact coins and bars are kept apart, or commingled, meaning pooled with other clients' like-kind metal. The cost differs, and so does what you get back at sale.

Costs to compare

Noble's setup fee ($80) is higher than the $50 listed for Augusta, Goldco and Birch Gold Group, and its annual fee ($80-100) is a range. The minimum shown at the top of this page and in the comparison table is $20,000; ask Noble to confirm that figure and every fee below in writing.

Rollover and transfer basics

Moving money into a Noble Gold IRA works like any metals IRA. A direct rollover from a 401(k) or a trustee-to-trustee transfer from another IRA avoids tax withholding and the 60-day deadline. An indirect rollover withholds 20% and requires you to replace that amount from your own funds to avoid tax on it.

Ask Noble which custodian it works with and request that custodian's own fee schedule, since the custodian's charges are separate from the dealer's.

Survival packs are not IRA products

Noble also sells Royal Survival Packs. Preparedness products are not IRA-eligible bullion, and metal you hold at home is outside the IRA. Keep the two purchases separate, and never fund a home-storage purchase from the IRA.

A sales conversation that blends the two is a reason to slow down and re-read the account paperwork.

Who Noble suits, and who should look elsewhere

Noble suits an investor who values Texas storage and a smaller, IRA-focused firm. If you want the longest history, look at Birch Gold Group (since 2003). If you want rollover speed, look at Goldco, and if you want a price lock, American Hartford Gold.

Verifying a smaller company

• Read the BBB record yourself, including how complaints were resolved.
• Search your state securities regulator's records.
• Check that the custodian is IRS-approved, separately from the dealer.
• Ask how sell-back works and how the price is set.
• Compare two written quotes for the same purchase.

Noble Gold against the others

Noble is the newest company on this site (2016) and rates 4.5, the lowest of the five. Its listed storage range ($100-150) matches American Hartford Gold's, while Goldco's reaches $175. Rating and age are only two inputs; fees, spreads and sell-back terms are the figures that change your outcome.

Selling, withdrawals and required distributions

Withdrawals before age 59½ usually bring income tax and a 10% penalty, and a Traditional account requires distributions from age 73. Either can be met by selling metal or taking it in kind at market value.

At a smaller firm, the sell-back process deserves a close look. Ask how a sale is quoted, how long it takes to settle, and what the custodian and depository charge to process it.
